Decision guideNo, we will not just tell you to buy Gold

TallyPrime Silver vs Gold - which edition should you buy?

There is exactly one meaningful difference between them, and once you see it the decision usually makes itself. Everything else - the accounting, the inventory, the GST returns, e-invoicing, e-way bills, the reports - is identical. This guide gives you the question to ask, the numbers to weigh it against, and the two awkward cases where the obvious answer is wrong.

The short answer

Does anyone ever have to wait because someone else has Tally open?

If no - Silver. One user, one computer, everything the software does, at ₹22,500 before GST.

If yes - Gold. Unlimited people in the same company at the same time on your office network, at ₹67,500 before GST.

That is the whole distinction. Gold does not have better GST handling, faster reports, extra voucher types or features that Silver lacks. It has more seats. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling, not advising.

Pick a side

Which description sounds like your office?

Read both columns honestly rather than aspirationally. Buying for the business you have is cheaper than buying for the one you imagine, and upgrading later is a real option.

Buy TallyPrime Silver

₹22,500 - Single user · one PC

  • One person does the billing and the accounts, on one computer
  • You bill from a single counter and nobody else needs Tally open at the same moment
  • Your accountant or CA works on a copy of the data, not on it simultaneously
  • You are a professional, consultant or small trader running your own books
  • Cash is tight and you would rather put the difference into implementation and training

Buy TallyPrime Gold

₹67,500 - Unlimited users on LAN

  • Two or more people need the same company open at the same time
  • Billing happens at the counter while somebody else posts receipts or checks stock
  • A separate person handles purchases, or a store keeper enters delivery notes
  • Your accounts team will grow in the next couple of years and you would rather not do this twice
  • You want multi-user remote access, which comes with Gold and an active TSS

The awkward cases

Where the obvious answer is wrong

Three situations come up again and again, and in each one the intuitive choice costs people money.

"Two Silvers are cheaper than one Gold"

On price alone they are: ₹45,000 against ₹67,500, and ₹9,000 a year in TSS against ₹13,500 / year. But two Silver licences are two separate single-user installations. They do not let two people work in the same company at the same moment - which is the entire reason you were considering Gold. If your two users keep genuinely separate books, two Silvers work. If they share one set of books, they do not.

"We will put it on the cloud, so Silver is enough"

Cloud hosting moves where TallyPrime runs. It does not change what the licence permits. Three people sharing a cloud desktop still need an edition that allows three simultaneous users. Cloud and Gold solve different problems and are often bought together. How Tally on Cloud works

"Buy Gold now, we will grow into it"

Sometimes sensible, often not. The upgrade path from Silver to Gold exists and your data comes across untouched, so money spent today on seats you will not use for two years is money that could have gone into implementation, training or a report that saves your accountant an afternoon a week. Buy for the office you have.

Above Gold

When Gold is not the answer either

Gold is generous, and most businesses never exhaust it. But there is a point where a shared data folder on an office network starts to strain - many people posting at once, years of data in one company, or branches that need to enter vouchers directly rather than sending sheets to head office. That is what TallyPrime Server is for: a proper server engine for high-concurrency use and remote data entry over a wide area network.

It is a serious step up in price - ₹2,70,000 with ₹27,000 / year in annual TSS, before GST - so it should be reached for when Gold is measurably struggling, not preemptively. The usual signals are reports that have become slow to open, users complaining about lag during peak billing, and a company file that has never been split by financial year.

If that sounds like your setup, the right first move is a look at where the time is actually going. Sometimes it is the server you need; sometimes it is a data split, a network fix or a faster machine, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the expensive box.

FAQ

Silver vs Gold, answered

What is the actual difference between TallyPrime Silver and Gold?

Simultaneous users. Silver is a single-user licence - one person working in the company at a time, on one computer. Gold allows unlimited users to work in the same company at the same time across one office LAN. The accounting, inventory, GST, e-invoicing and reporting features are identical in both.

Which TallyPrime edition should I buy?

Ask one question: does anybody ever have to wait because someone else has Tally open? If the honest answer is no, Silver is the right purchase and Gold would be money spent on capacity you will not use. If the answer is yes, even once a week, Gold pays for itself in time saved almost immediately.

Is Gold worth the extra money?

Gold costs ₹45,000 more than Silver up front and ₹9,000 more each year in TSS, both before GST. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether people are queueing for the software. For a two-person accounts department it usually is. For a one-person office it usually is not, and we will say so.

Can I buy two Silver licences instead of one Gold?

Two Silver licences cost ₹45,000 against ₹67,500 for one Gold, so on price alone it looks attractive. But they are two independent single-user installations, not a two-user setup - they do not give two people simultaneous access to one shared company. If your two users genuinely work on separate books, two Silvers are fine. If they work on the same books together, only Gold does that.

Can I upgrade from Silver to Gold later?

Yes, Tally provides an upgrade path from Silver to Gold, and your data comes across untouched - it is a licensing change, not a reinstallation of your books. The upgrade is priced by Tally and depends on your existing licence, so send us the serial number and we will confirm the amount.

Does Gold mean unlimited users everywhere?

Unlimited simultaneous users on one office local area network. It is not a licence to run your business from six branches over the internet - that is a different problem, solved either by Tally Server or by hosting TallyPrime on the cloud.

When do I need TallyPrime Server instead of Gold?

Server is for larger environments: many concurrent users, large data, and remote data entry over a wide area network rather than a single LAN. It is a significant step up in price at ₹2,70,000 with ₹27,000 / year in TSS, so it is worth reaching only when Gold is genuinely straining - typically when performance degrades under load or when branches need to enter vouchers directly.

Can I run Silver on two computers?

You can install TallyPrime in more than one place, but the licence governs simultaneous use - with Silver, one user at a time. Two people trying to work at once will find the second one blocked. If that is your situation, the honest fix is Gold rather than a workaround.

Does the cloud change which edition I need?

No, and this trips people up. Hosting TallyPrime on a cloud server changes where the software runs, not how many people the licence allows to work at once. If three staff will use the cloud desktop together, you still need a multi-user edition.

Is there a rental option for Gold?

Yes. Gold rents at ₹2,250 per month and Silver at ₹750 per month, both before GST. Renting is worth considering for a short project or a new venture; comparing list prices, buying works out cheaper from roughly the fourth year onward.
